We offer Ballet/Tap combination and Jazz/Hip Hop combination classes for students ages 5-6 in Kindergarten. These classes build on our preschool classes in working to improve creative movement, locomotor skills and rhythms. We also work on developing dance technique and learning dance terminology while dancing in a fun environment.
Ballet is the foundation for dance and an excellent and necessary foundation for other forms of dance. Proper technique and terms are emphasized in all classes. Barre, center floor and across floor combinations are taught to achieve a progression of advancement for the student. Classes are taught at the appropriate age and technique levels. Classical ballet is taught to ages 1 through adult.
Contemporary is a form of dance influenced by both classical ballet and modern dance. It takes its technique from classical ballet, although it permits a greater range of movement that may not adhere to the strict body lines set forth by ballet technique. Many of its concepts come from the ideas and innovations of 20th century modern dance, including floorwork and contemporary music. We offer Intermediate and Advanced Contemporary classes are for our students in Levels 2-6. Contemporary students must also be enrolled in both ballet and jazz.
Pointe classes are by invitation only to advanced ballet students. Students must have very strong ballet technique and a proper level of physical strength determined by the instructor. Pointe students must have trained in our ballet program for many years.
Tap classes are geared to teach basic steps, correct terminology and the understanding of rhythmic patterns. Barre, center floor, and across floor combinations are taught to achieve a progression of advancement for the student. Tap combinations are constructed into routines at the appropriate age and technique levels. Tap is taught to ages 3 through adult.
Jazz classes start with warm-ups and stretching techniques at the barre and center floor. Classes consist of basic jazz movements including isolations, turns and leaps. Barre, center floor and across floor combinations are taught to achieve a progression of advancement for the student. Lyrical and contemporary styles of jazz are offered in older student classes. We strongly encourage jazz dancers to take ballet as well. Jazz is taught to ages 5 through adult.
This class is an introduction to the Musical Theater genre for young children. Classes will provide young students the opportunity to explore acting exercises, simple movement for musical theater and an introduction to singing. Students will learn songs and movement from current and classic musicals as well as the history of Musical Theater. We offer Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Musical Theater classes for ages 7 - adult.
Hip Hop classes offer a wide world of funk and street dance. Technique and combinations are taught in a progressive manner. Hip Hop classes encourage creative movement and self-expression. Hip Hop is offered to ages 5 through adult. Our hip hop classes include family-friendly music and conservative appropriate dance moves. We also offer an All Boys Hip Hop class on Monday for ages 5-12.
This class focuses on the qualities of modern dance, such as body patterning, inversions, weight shifting, movement concepts/qualities and performance practices. The class also works with improvisation as a way to connect with each other and a way to generate movement to express how improvisation can be a value to a dancer's experience. Additionally, dancers learn some Out On a Limb Dance Company choreography to explore moving in the context of a specific dance and how the movement qualities change depending on the context of the dance. Modern is offered to our advanced students in Levels 5-6 and is also open to college students and adults.
Open classes are currently offered in Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop and Musical Theater. These classes are conveniently offered in the evenings and are geared towards the adult who always wanted to take dance, or the college student who wants to continue taking dance classes. Classes are taught on a beginner/intermediate level. Classes are structured with warm-ups, technique and fun combinations. JSOD has partnered with MCC Continuing Education for our Open Classes.
